History

The dogma of the Assumption was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1950, but the feast has been observed since the 5th century in Eastern Christianity. In Poland, it also coincides with the anniversary of the 1920 Battle of Warsaw.

Traditions

Polish faithful bring bouquets of herbs, grains, and flowers to churches for blessing — hence the name “Our Lady of Herbs.” Pilgrimages to Marian shrines, especially the Jasna Góra Monastery, are common.

Contemporary celebrations

This is a public holiday. Religious observances are accompanied by national and military events. In Warsaw, parades and commemorations are held on Polish Armed Forces Day.
