History
Labour Day originated in the 19th century from workers' strikes in the United States, notably the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886. In Poland, it became an official state holiday in 1950 during the communist era, although it had already been celebrated in socialist circles.
Traditions
During the communist period, May Day parades were common, featuring banners, flags, and official speeches. Today, the day is used to reflect on workers’ rights and achievements.
