History
The Constitution was passed by the Great Sejm and aimed to strengthen the state, eliminate the liberum veto, and improve the rights of townspeople and peasants. It was a significant reform that was ultimately undone by the partitions of Poland.
Traditions
Even during the 19th century, Poles celebrated May 3rd despite suppression by occupying powers. During the interwar period, it was a patriotic celebration. The holiday was banned under communism and restored in 1990.
Contemporary celebrations
May 3rd is a public holiday. Ceremonies include state speeches, military parades, concerts, and church services. The main national events take place in Warsaw, especially around Castle Square.
